Assessing Pupils' Progress (APP) is a structured approach to in-school assessment which:
This programme developed, piloted, evaluated and then 'took to market' over a number of years the APP approach for English and Mathematics at key stages 1, 2 and 3 and then extended it to Science at key stages 1 and 2 and to other subjects at key stage 3 and to Speaking and Listening. Each stage had developed Assessment Guidelines, being criteria for each level to help teachers assess pupils' work in relation to national standards. Handbooks were developed to aid teachers in using the materials and approach and exemplars of pupils' performance were provided in standards files generated by teachers undertaking the pilots.
“Pupils have taken ownership of their own learning, they know where they are, where they need to go and can find out how to get there.” Key Stage 2 teacher
Towards the end of the development programme, in 2010 we led on the development and delivery of materials to support teachers engage with parents and pupils on progress, including what parents can do to help their child at home.
Full details about APP are archived here. The English and Mathematics guides for parents can be downloaded below.
